Help - We Can't Find the Septic Tank Lids!

It’s good to know where they are before you need them.

Don’t wait until the septic inspection to locate the lids. If the lids cannot be located, you cannot perform a septic inspection. Lids are that important.

The easiest way, of course, is to look at the original septic system plans but they are not as accurate or as detailed as you would think. Sometimes there is just an X on the map indicating the lid.

Each county has their own system for accessing septic logs, either online or requesting by email or phone. However, not all of them are available, as many systems were installed prior to the world wide web. Nor do inspection records exist if they are not required by the county.

If you cannot find the septic lids, you can try one of the following:

  • Ask a neighbor if they know the location.
  • Use a dousing rod to locate the lid and tank.
  • Call septic pumping companies to see if they have records.
  • Hire a service to locate the system components. This can involve digging up the yard and can cost $200 to $500.

Locating the septic system components and performing a septic inspection are completely different services and should not be mistaken.
